We recently sat down with Crystal Wood, Associate Registrar & External Liaison, and Rachel Hertz-Cobb, Senior Administrative Officer, of the Yellowhead Tribal College (YTC) located in The Orange Hub on Stony Plain Road! The Yellowhead Tribal College was established in 1986 by the Yellowhead Tribal Council to meet the educational needs of its members (currently Al-exander First Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, O’Chiese First Nation, and Sunchild First Nation) to foster the social, political, and economic development essential to building sustainable communities. YTC is accredited by the World Indigenous Nation Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC) as well as the National Indigenous Accreditation Board (NIAB). The college now offers academic upgrading, and degrees to all adult learners.
“We welcome all students at all stages in their educational journey,” states Wood, “Whoever you are, wherever you are, wherever you are from, there is a place for you at YTC!”
The Student Services at the Yellowhead Tribal College offers many student related programs and workshops that are centered around the Medicine Wheel, which include spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. The workshops offered vary, and students choose which ones they want to participate in. Examples of workshops include: beading, land-based tachings, healing series, yoga, scholarship information sessions, Elder storytelling, counselling services, on-campus food bank, and much more. Some of the more popular degrees and programs at the College are the Indigenous Social Work Diploma and the Indigenous Language Degree.
The College provides programs in a flexible, supportive academic environment that nurtures Indigenous cultures and traditions. They offer a variety of educational opportunities for those in the area. YTC students are able to learn and participate in Indigenous culture, languages and activities. The Yellowhead Tribal College also likes to engage in the community by working with, and supporting community members. For example, the College goes out to communities, high schools, and organizations in the area to hold presentations and show community members the great services that they offer!
When the pandemic hit, the College remained open, however, they moved to an online delivery format for the Winter and Spring terms. The delivery of YTC classes for the Fall term will be a blended format of in-school, and online. The Yellowhead Tribal College is currently accepting applications for Winter 2020.
